Yes you can. You can use a USB Network Bridge Cable. This in NOT a standard USB cable. If you use a standard USBcable you will damage your motherboard. In the following link is an example of the USB Network Bridge Cable* I have seen them from $9.99 to $60+.
The method recommended by the other members would be much better. Either wired or wireless NIC.*** If you do use two NIC instead of USB your will also need a Crossover Cable, not a patch cable*****. If you use a router you would need a Patch Cable****.
QUOTE **
"Ordinary USB cables must not be used to connect two computers directly to each other. Attempting to do so can electrically damage the computers. However, special USB cables designed for direct connection exist; these can be used safely. You may prefer this option if your computers lack functional Ethernet network adapters. "

Good luck trying this with WIn 98. You'd be doing yourself a big favour just buying a cheap ethernet switch and two ethernet cables. It's as cheap as any other solution and you'll have a running chance of getting it working.

You need something called a cat5 cross over cable it is used for connecting two similar ethernet devices together. Depending on the OS you are using go to setup network connection and then follow the wizard

No, USB cables are for connecting external devices only. You need an ethernet cable (try Google) . They're fairly cheap and very fast.
