◙ Signup for the free Geocities homepage here http://geocities.yahoo.com/ps/learn2/HowItWorks4_Free.html Be careful Yahoo likes to fool you so you will accidentally signup for one of their premium (paid) accounts. They will misguide you if you let them. Here is a page that will take you on a tour http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/geo/tour/tour-01.html

◙ NOTE: Most people don't bother reading the help pages. Be smart and skim through them so you'll know where to get help when you need it in a hurry.

Freewebs.com provides a great service for free website creation. You can start your own website for free (www.freewebs.com/yourusernamehere).
It's nice because there's only 1 advertisement at the top of the page. You have 40-42 Megabytes of web space and 500 Megabytes of Bandwidth, which is great. That's good for about 500-1000 visitors/month average. My site is www.freewebs.com/stormalert.

You can add HTML, or just add text, smilies, web polls, reviews, a ton of stuff!

Wow...this could get lengthy...I'll try and keep it very short: Try a good service such as GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com). However, I wouldn't do their web templates - they suck. There are plenty good ones for cheap on the internet. Get a cheap HTML editor and pull the template you find into it and modify it to your likings. On GoDaddy, you can test your website name to see if anyone has it or not. They are reasonably priced and have excellent support. Plus, as you get better at it, you can upgrade by adding a database or a store-front or whatever.

Be aware that free web site builders come with advertising banners, try Rapidweaver or 1&1, cost a tiny bit of money but are worth it.

Start here!

http://newaccounts.freewebs.com/

You can have a page online before morning if you would like.
There is no charge for a basic web page and there is a nice
site building tool to help you get started.

This site usually serves it's ads on your page very nicely. That is what you trade for webspace ... their ads on your page.
No big deal for a personal site or fan site. It will get you started.

Why do you want to?

If it's just to *have* a site, then try piczo or myspace or freewebs or similar.
If it's to learn how to write them, then you want to look for a hosting provider, who will give you some server space and bandwidth, and let you upload your website as and when you've written it.
