It's an entire family tree. Every generation of music descends from previous generations. Rock owes a debt to rhythm&blues, which in turn was heavily influenced by African music. Heavy metal is inspired heavily by rock and classical. Synthesizers also have heavily influenced modern music. New Wave, Disco, and Progressive Rock were the first to dabble in them, and you hear them incorporated into practically everything nowadays. Rap makes use of synthesized music, and I also think spoken word was a heavy influence of rap. (More recently, you're starting to hear Latino music influence rap, R&B, and even pop music to a degree.)

I think the earliest aborigini tribes came up with beats and drums, etc. Most of the music we get today is a mixture of music through the ages, and added together in different melodies and harmonies in order to make new songs that appeal to large crowds. The earliest people on earth used drum beats to summon their lords and the mythological creatures, and flutes and violins were added for beauty and higher sound, and other musical instruments were found on a whim in order to create different sounds, and put all together creates the music that has evolved into todays sounds.
