Any way to give people more choices could be considered an improvement. If there were more resources available to everyone, that would be one way. Another was thought up by the Greeks a long time ago. Now the Republic is the gold standard by which good governance is measured. If you need to know a goal to work toward, consider our world. We live on a very small planet surrounded by enormous amounts of resources in space. We are on the cusp of technical ability. As a race, humanity can either destroy itself or expand its world. It really boils down to the fork in the road. One path seems logical, sensible and cautious. Nationalism speaks the language of being on guard against "the others." This language is most conservative in nature. I call it the language of fear and those who speak it walk that path. That path is the most seductive. The "war on terror" is a study in that way.
The other path seems illogical, whimsical and careless. Progressives speak of the need to include all voices in our collective dialogue. Often accused of being "liberal," and "touchy feely" I call it the language of love. Remember who the great progressives were and everything becomes quite clear. Here is a short list to ponder:
Benjamin Franklin
Charles Dickens
Helen Keller
Mark Twain
Jesus of Nazareth
Lao Tzu
Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha)
Bob Dylan
Chrissy Hynde
Cheryl Crowe
Neal Pert
One of the biggest problems, I see, is the knack for invention to always favor the upper tiers of society. When engineers and innovators aim toward the bottom of society we all benifit. I call that the bottom up or trickle up approach. Education is applied to society in a manner that is as stratified as the apparent resuling social order. When education is made more equitable, society should follow in time. No one changes the world like the inventor. That person changes the very fabric of reality. Cultivate innovation from the people who know hardship. One example of this can be found in the personage of Henry Ford. He was called a traitor to his class for the wages he paid his workers. He wasn't perfect though. There was a lot of conservatism in his personality. But in the end he did create a way to, more equitably, distribute high speed transportation throughout society. in summary; we need to innovate closer to the heart.

Just RESPECT! We are not all the same, we will never all think the same, believe in the same religion, look the same, dress the same, vote the same, the world would be a really boring place if we did. But if we just respect each others differences and their right to look, think, believe and live the way they choose the world would be a much better place.
