I found this on a web site for you
The beefeaters are actually retired soldiers. In order to become one after his regular military service, Mick had to have an interview, one of the few things the post has in common with other jobs. But, most importance is given to the length of military service (the longer the better) and the applicant’s record of distinguished service (the more medals the better). There are vacancies for 40 Yeomen Warders, and 38 of the posts are occupied at present. Considering that the beefeaters must be retired soldiers, the demand for the job is quite limited. The beefeater is allowed to perform his duties until he is 60 years old, and than he needs to retire again.
Hope this answers your question.

Being a Beefeater is not hereditary or passed down the generations.
To try to become a Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) you need to have served in either Royal Marines, Army or RAF and achieved the rank of Warrant Officer, Staff Sergeant or Flight Sergeant. Then pass the interviews and training.
Yes accommodation is supplied.

beefeaters are retired soldiers from the British army, i think having the minimum rank of warrant officer. However im not sure if they have to apply for the posistion or are selected. It is not true they live at the tower , however there is a pub there they can use.

The beefeaters are actually retired soldiers. As a beefeater, one needs to be prepared for incidents such as bomb scares, anarchic or republican actions, robbery attempts and the panic that would accompany each of these. Also, a whole range of different procedures, such as being able to administer first aid must be mastered.

You have to have risen to the rank of at least sergeant major in the army and have 22 years service with good conduct. As far as I know not all Yeoman Warders live in the Tower.

I think they give priority to those who have served in the English military or something. I kinda remember them saying that from the tour, but I don't know...
