I don't know about engraving a pearl (the vibration may shatter them), but it may be possible to laser-etch one.

I work in a jewellers who sell Mikimoto (the finest pearl growers in the world) and although we have never had any in stock, it seams to me it might be plausible.

Why not just attach the pearl to something that can be safely engraved? That's like trying to etch a gemstone, eek!

Possibly..but with extreme care. Did you know you can get nacreous excressences(?!) from oysters in the shape of crucifixes, Bhuddas etc?-Depends what you inject into the luckless bivalve gastropod..but apparently the poor mollusc will faithfully mould the shape in mother-of-pearl! Good luck!

I wouldn't want to try, you'd also probably need a microscope if you wanted to engrave anything other than initials
