I cannot figure it out. Bush and them keep on saying we are doing a service and that we are spreading democracy. It makes no sense because America in its history is all about self-interest. And its not only america, every country is out for its own self interest. And this thing about spreading democracy is just bushitt (:D), if i recall this same excuse was used while were expanding american territory back in the day. Is this Manifest Destiny? Please clarify things for me.

There's a neo-conservative agenda to take over key portions of the world - and it has nothing to do with democracy or freedom. Iraq was chosen because of its strategic location and its oil reserves.

Rough evidence . . .there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and no significant connection between Iraq and 9-11. It was strongly asserted by the Bush administration that there were WMDs and it was strongly alluded that there was a connection to 9-11.

Saudi Arabia has a worse human rights situation than Iraq, and has no democracy, but the government complies with the US wishes, so Bush leaves them alone. North Korea actually had wmd's as evidenced by their recent nuke test, but Bush refused to even negotiate with them (no oil).

By the way, Cheney's stock in Halliburton went up over 3000 percent last year - 245K to 8 Million

Of course this has nothing to do with democracy. It is all about power and control and influence. We are there for a number of reasons based on a number of interest groups within our country. The corporations (Oil companies) want to control the oil supply to the world so they fund politicians to do this democracy building stuff; the Neo Conservatives (not the religious conservatives) want to dominate the world militarily and economically, so they want to make sure the world keeps defending itself and does not have time to develop economically to pose any threat to us; the Religious Right want to fulfill the prophecy of Israel controlling all of the Middle East so that Jesus can come and destroy all the Jews and kill all the non-believers and bring the End Times; The Defense Contractors support war since that is how they make all the money.

Yes, countries in the past have done the same. But people in the past used to believe the world was flat, that does not mean that you need to continue to make that mistake. People do have the capacity to change and some times they change for the better.

I hope this puts things in perspective for you.

it is my thought that we went into iraq in order to have a military presence there and set up a puppet government, and to do the same thing in afganistan so that we could in the end, get iran, which is between both countries. but things didn't go as planned and both iraq and afganistan are a mess. but i don't think bush will ever back down because he really thinks we can take over the middle east and control the oil. he can be very patient because he's not losing his children.

I believe that there is a general answer and more specific answer to your question. The general answer is that we need to maintain a presence of strength in the region to protect our interest by guaranteeing our ability to buy Middle Eastern oil. The more specific answer to your question is that we need permanent military bases in Iraq to achieve our goal in the general answer. We cannot rely on Saudi Arabia because our presence may incite the people to revolt, and we desperately need the Kingdom to maintain control of the largest oil reserve in the world. Iraq with a puppet government is ideal for our purposes.

In President Bush's press conference last week, he was specifically asked if the US intended to maintain permanent military bases in Iraq, and he flinched and then changed the subject. I take that as probable confirmation of what I believe.

For reasons that change like fashion trends:

Weapons of M.D., was the justification before the war.
When there were no WMD's found, the reason for spreading democracy became the excuse.

Of course those are only PUBLICALLY PROCLAIMED reasons for the war in Iraq.

'WAR IS PEACE'
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY'
'IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH'

As Kerry said yesterday, Bush wasted his education drunk in a fraternity house and never developed his mind. A stupid person will delegate to stupid pseudo-intellectual advisors. So Bush thought that the Iraqi people would welcome us peacefully. We would pay for the short invasion and occupation with Iraqi oil (which would still limit production so as not to drive down OPEC-Exxon's profits). Halliburton would make profits and provide jobs in this Neverneverland
