16 - 35 and to actually get through to the judges (most people still think you see the judges first time - actually you take it in turns to stand up and sing in front of everybody else and some other people decide whether you go through to see the judges) either you have to be really good (so they know that you will go through) or really bad (to give everyone a laugh), they might send the odd middle person who they are unsure on whether or not the judges will let them through just to see and so that the viewers at home get a good variety.
Oh, and maybe someone with a sad story that says why they want to go through, they like to feature one or two of those.

Over sixteen, good voice, good song choice that is suited to your voice not to dated or sounding like the origional artist Simon hates copy cats. Dress well not to scruffy, not to over the top if your 16 dress like sixteen if fourty dress like forty. If you are luck enough to actually get through to the judges then be prepared to have good honest answers as to why you want to sing and what makes you have the e-factor.Oh and the good old sob story seems to help.
Boot camp much of the above and if you are "one of the choosen ones" be prepared for being panipulated, no own choice of song, clothes, who you see when you see then, no phones no contact to out side world.

Being 16 and over with talent and a voice would help. Also I would imagine confidence to a point. I don't think singing well on karaoke while pissed counts though
