I could be the only one, but I think that word is hilarious! I don't think that it is so much the word that is so offensive. It is the context in which it was meant. Some people feel the same way about being called a b*tch.

It is EXTREMELY derogatory to call a woman that probably the equivalent to men if we called them a 'SHORT MAN' (not height) or a ONE MINUTE MAN. That would irritate most men I would expect.
