Most doctors now days do one on your first visit to check growth and verify dates. If not it won't be too long, so don't get discouraged. Congrats to you!!!

Unless there are concerns about yours or the baby's health, you will probably have to wait a while. Although, I hear that it varies from doctor to doctor and by location. I can tell you what it is like where I live and in several other places I have heard of...
Sonograms and ultrasounds are fairly expensive. Doctors generally try to do them at a time when the baby is to the stage of development where you can tell if it's a boy or girl and if the other organs are developing properly. I believe that's somewhere around 5 months or a little sooner. I got mine at 22 weeks.
Congratulations :) It has also been my experience that the first doctor's appointment is the best one to ask the millions of questions that you may have. Although, if any more questions come up your doctor should be happy to answer them. I am in a small town and my doctor actually blocks out about 2 hours for the first appointment when you get pregnant. - Plenty of time to ask questions and get stuff explained. So if you are wondering anything, you may want to write it down to make sure you remember to ask.

I had three ultra sounds. The first one was the first time I saw my doctor. I found out I was pregnant from one doctor, and got a new one. He did one to verify my due date. They did the second one at 4 months to make sure that all of the other organs were developing correctly. This is when I found out I was having a boy. And I had a third one because I was getting so big, and they wanted to see if it was all baby or if it was alot of water. They were concerned because I had only gained 30 lbs, and my belly was 45cms! It was all baby, he was born 9lbs, 5oz. Good luck!

I had an internal sonogram at my first visit, which they gave me pictures of. You couldn't really see anything but a "blob". I was about 6-7 weeks I believe.

Fetal ultrasound is the safest way to check for problems and get information about your fetus, such as its size and position. It does not use X-rays or other types of radiation that may harm your fetus. It can be done as early as the 5th week of pregnancy. The sex of your fetus can sometimes be determined by about the 18th week of pregnancy. For more information, see:

I think it varies. I lived in a more rural place when expecting and my dr. didn't do one until I was almost 16 weeks.
