you either need a network card in each PC and an RJ45 Crossover cable to connect the two, or if they are far apart you can use a wireless connection using a router/hub. The first option is cheaper but can be quite tricky to set up - I've just done it and both my PC's already had network cards in so I only had to get the cable at 5 pounds. The wireless option could be around 90 pounds? but it really depends on the distance between the pc's i.e. how easy it would be to run the cable between them. You will need help to set up the cable option I had to get my son (who is a PHD in computer science) to do mine and it took around 3 hours as there are some tricky settings to make - I think the wireless option may be easier to set up but more expensive. I'm using windows XP on both mine - not sure if other operating systems are easier? - good luck.

If you have a broadband service, you need to get a "Cable/DSL Router". If the PC's are separated by floors you might want to try and get a "Wireless Cable/DSL Router" instead. If you choose to go wireless for the PC up stairs you also need to purchase a Wireless NIC (Network Interface Card) this card has to to be installed on the PC upstairs. To make it a bit easier get a "Wireless USB Adapter" then all you have to do is plug it into one of the USB ports on the front or back of the PC.
When you get the router you will take the "Eathernet Cable" from the back of your PC downstaris and plug it into the spot on the router that says either (Cable, Modem, WAN, LAN, or Internet) on the router. On the router there will also be ports numbered from 1-4 you will connect your computer to on of thoes spots
The router will automatically broadcast a wireless signal that the PC upstairts will pick up. With the wireless adapter.
I know this sounds complicated but when you get the router it will have a diagram that will show you exactly what I explained above and will make it easier.
Here are some links to the equiptment you will need.
I hope all that helps out a bit
P.S. I work for the internet company in my area thats how I know all this.

Are you wireless or wired?
If you are wired you need to get a Linksys Smart Router or something like that. Then you hook the internet to the modem if you have one and the modem to the router and then both computers coming out of the router.
XP will help you set up your network so you can decide if the computers can see each other. Also they can share a printer.
This may be too complicated for you if you are not familiar with computers and networking. Maybe you have a friend who can help you.

If you have xp, you can set up internet connection sharing. After you run the wizard on one computer, you have the option to make a disk with the required installment on it and pop it into the second computer. This is presuming that you have both computer hooked up in a workgroup. If not, then you will need to do that first.

You can connect it with a line coming out of the computer to other computer or use router. It's a wireless internet connection thing and...any of the electric stores should have it. You can go ask the clerk and they should help you out about router.
