I had the widescreen Hp Pavilion dv5157eu. 100 gig HDD, 1 gig memory, CD/DVD rewriter, 6 in 1 card reader - remote control for watching DVD and playing music. Wireless. AMD turion 64 mobile technology - cost around £700 at Comet. I had a DVB stick so I could watch TV in bed too. Bad news is Workd 8 is rubbish after using Office - but XP home wasn't as bad as I thought - usually I use XP professional. The XP and all software was pre-installed and the HDD partitioned for backup too. I don't like that. I backed up to DVD - so have two backups. But had to put some decent software on. I suppose if there is a disaster it won't be quite so bad - if I use that backup.

I brought an ASUS V6M.
ASUS make PC compnents and in an attempt to get into the Laptop market, they put this laptop together with all the top compenants and a great price.
I use the built in web cam to contact friends overseas, download music and movies and most other standard PC tasks and have had no issues at all.

Depends on your price point, I'd agree with going with a dell if you want one that will last 2 years and cheap. If you are getting one get one with a Merom process based on Intel's core duo 2 line.
These are 64bit dual core processors with a 4mb L2 cache which is 4x that of the AMD's line. Their front side bus is at 1.3ghz for the woodcrest. All in all, these processors are 25% to similarly clocked AMDs, and they are cheap. Buy a merom laptop.
Also try to get an integated video card if you care about gaming at all.

NOT A MAC!!!!
They look good but that's about it; buy a Dell or a Packard Bell they are brilliant at fixing themselves when they get completely f*****.
Oh and if its your first laptop; laptop battery life is really crappy.
The only battery life which is good is a Lithium-ion 9 cell battery which comes with IBM laptops

I personally think Sony make the better laptops (though they are a bit more expensive) But the battery life isn't that good. Currently using a very light weight Fujitsu Seimens - and its great - just check what software you get with it.

I would stray from the dell laptops as I feel they are not up to par with Toshiba. Toshiba I feel is the best, but you will get many different opinions.

i am unsure of the make but toysrus are selling a briliant one just now. it has a 15inch screen (fit a dongle for £25 and it turns into a TV), 2 1/2 hours battery life (great for watching dvd's) in car charger. all this and more for an astound £345. excellent. we are buying one for the kids christmas. we do loads of caravaning and it will be brilliant on weekends away. hope you find one thats exactly right for you.

You are better off getting a desktop. Trust me son, I just got out of college, and my laptop was the worst investment I ever made. I dropped 2K on a programming monster, with the though of "hey! i can take this to class!". let me tell you, you won't take it to class. better off buying a desktop and getting more bang for your buck. I wish I would have. thats a nice laptop for the money though. Resolution is a bit low, but thats okay, the screen is small.
