So, I just asked this question http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ao_psPafdOwZNLr6iz.RXq8ezKIX?qid=20061030125727AAYtVwi and got some very helpful responses, and will be taking him to the children hospital as soon as I get off work in about an hour...would pnuemonia or the flu like some of you suggest last as long as four months? cause he has been this way since he was born.

I guess asthma makes sense, does anyone know what causes babies to have asthma?

If he was that way since he was born, the doctors would have diagnosed him as having pnuemonia. Also if it was pnuemonia it probably would have killed him by now or at least gotten worse since he was born.

If it was the flu there would be other symptoms such as fever or vomiting--not just breathing problems.

It wouldn't be asthma either because surely he would have had an asthma attack by now or the doctors would have seen him and diagnosed him as having asthma.

I don't believe Pnuemonia or the flu would last that long because it can be fatal. My 18 month old has Asthma and I'm told that it's because it runs in the family. I have asthma so the doctor said that I passed it on to her. It sounds to me like it's asthma and you shouldn't wait until you get out of work. You should take him already!! Asthma can be fatal really fast. Please don't risk it take your baby NOW!! They'll probably give you a nebulizer and breathing machine and you'll have to use that for a while at home.

My friend's son has what the doctor called a "soft esphogus" and he made a weezing sound all the time and still has a slight sound now (he is 2 years old). I dont know about the sinking chest part, but he always sounded congested like he had a real bad cold. Her doc said that it would go away over time and there was nothing to be worried about. But I would still check with someone just to make sure. Hope this helps, and good luck!!

3 of my 5 kids have asthma for no reason at all, (though lots of things can cause it) the number one being smoking. I have to be careful because they are all very susceptible to pneumonia. Try to make sure you keep him away from anyone who has a cold. They also got RSV EVERY year until they out grew it. It's hard, but you have to watch for ANY wheezing you think you might hear. Take him right to the Dr. Most kids out grow it eventually. (I'm still waiting for mine to, but their young yet.) GOOD LUCK!

It is also possible that your child has cystic fibrosis.

I don't want to freak you out he sounds like he has some symptoms my friend has who has CF.

It is a genetic disorder that uses medication to help it but it never goes away.
