I would check to see if the power steering pump is spinning. Turn the wheel with the hood up to see if the pump picks up load (you should be able to tell by the sound. If there are no leaks anywhere, the pump may be shot. Also, I don't know this particular car, but if it has rack and pinion steering, you could have damage to that unit which will make steering very difficult. I would take it to a trusted mechanic who can home in on the problem. Repairs to rack and pinion steering is expensive $500 or more for a replacement unit. The power steering pump can be replace for about $125. Good luck.

It is not the belt. The 2000 Malibu uses a serpentine belt to drive the accessories. 1 belt drives everything. So if it were the belt, the water pump wouldn't turn, the engine would overheat. The alternator wouldn't work, the battery light would stay on.

The rack portion of the rack and pinion steering was most likely damaged when the tow truck pulled you out. Possibly one of the rods coming out of the rack got bent.

The rack on this vehicle is not easily replaced. I think you need to remove the engine to access it. It is located on the firewall behind the engine.

I suggest bringing it to a mechanic for an estimate.

Broken power steering belt or no fluid in power steering pump, unless you have rack and pinion steering and not true power steering it should be an easy fix..even if the pump is bad its only a 60.00 part at a local auto store. or 200.00 at the dealer.

It sounds like you damaged your steering rack, or you have squashed the power steering cooler lines.

If is just happens right after startup, it's called "Morning Sickness".
Meaning your rack & Pinion is failing. time to replace. And flush the system.
Outside of that , check fluid and belt.

~Given the thorough inspection I just gave it and me mechanical expertise, I can uneqivically say - I ain't working right. Putting some extra virgin olive oil in with the power steering fluid, but no more than 4 ounces, might do something.
