This is NOT a personal situation so please no "get a job" remarks or personal attacks.
If you try to claim Income Support they take into account, not your partner's wages but how many hours he/she works. And the limit is 16.
So if, for example, your partner worked 18 hours at a minimum wage job and brought home somethign like £80 a week they would refuse you Income Support.
Yet £80 a week is less than the law says a couple need to live on).
So how do they justify that?
BTW as for Working Tax Credits, you can't claim them if you'rer under 25 (unless you have kids) or you work under 30 hours a week.

steph - you're right, if you're under 25 or you work less than 30 hours a week you can only get working tax credit if you have kids.
Someone of 22 who works 25 hours a week and has no kids could not get Working Tax Credit.

Income support is mainly for single parent and people who cant work due to illness.
Jobseekers allowance would be the right benefit to claim if you are looking for work and your partner works under 24 hours a week.
For tax credits the rule of 30 hours is for single people i think.

My answer is I don't know, but something similar happened with my sister in law recently. She came back from living in Spain to get back with her partner, who is only the father of her 1 year old son. She also has a 7 and 9 year old from her previous marriage. She went along to the job centre and asked if she could claim income support, but she was told no because she had a partner who worked....even though he is not the father of her eldest children, and she gets no money from their father. Her partners wages are not enough to support the eldest children, and they are walking around in scruffy clothes because he just cannot buy them any!
I think in the situation described above, the couple would have to go onto tax credits. Income Support is generally only any use if you're a single parent, and you get a whopping £103 (approx) per week! It's a system that I don't think is fair, but in a country full of benefit claimers, I'm not sure there's another solution.

Think about what I say here real good............If everyone worked only 30 hours a week they would make the same amount of take home pay because the taxes being taken out of their pay to pay for those who do not work would not take place because the people who do not work would have a job too.Everyone would have more time for family, meaning better family structure.Everyone would have money meaning a boost for the economy. people would be off the streets meaning less time to get into trouble. No more handouts to the people who earn a living through handout programs. More fun for everyone. The benifits from this is unlimited. The chain reaction from this simple procedure is overwelming.

I thought you could get tax credits if you worked more than 16 hours a week, in fact I know you can coz we do and my partner works 25 a week (I am a student). But maybe thats coz we have kids.
Anyway its easy to see why so many people just give up and go on the dole then isnt it?

they cant justify it I'm a full time carer 24/7 getting £46 per week that the gov make up to £82 that people get for income support so the gov pay me nothing in retrospect for being a carer .. so how do you justify that ...and believe you can get tax credits if you earn under £13000 per annum I did think you have to be over 25 could be wrong

Gorden brown stayed in a 5 star hotel once and pretended to be homeless ,the government gave him about 6 pounds a day to live on ,he said it was possible, forge ting his 3 course lunches,5 star bed at night ,and every one has to go with it , made the public a laughing stock and every body laughs with him because your all brainwashed with your decisions and we haven't really got the power to do anything about it, work on the side your own sister grass you up for 50 pound ,to buy some trainers or a nice dress.

They discriminate against minority groups because they can get away with it - especially if you don't vote. They attack the young, sick, disabled, elderly - and they are better than the Conservatives. They were so bad young people turned out on the streets and protested - but this generation wouldn't tear themselves away from their computers.

I suggest talking to someone at the Job Centre to make sure that right amounts are being paid. It does not sound right to me!
