It's the nature of the beast.
Politicians think that they are simply smarter than the average "uneducated" constituent, so they lie to us to make us do what THEY think is best. They treat us like children who have to be led by the hand to the right decision.
Lots of people with college degrees actually have this problem. They use the word "educated" like it means they are somehow more intelligent, more informed, and basically smarter than those who didn't go to college.

Because they can. And, because they know there is always a large segment of the population who are eager to blindly accept their lies. The Bush Administration is a perfect example.
