I know it is all mythical, but I was wondering why witches allegedly cannot cross running water. Is there any reason why this is? Is there some mention of the consequences of a witch crossing water in any myths/stories? Is there some sort of magical reason why they can't cross running water? (I know it is all fictional, but none-the-less I'd like serious answers, a friend of mine wishes to know to entertain children at halloween, but although she knows that witches aren't supposed to be able to cross running water, she does not know if there is any myths which explain why (I know it is mentioned in "Tam O'Shanter", but I'm not sure if it is explained.))

Well to "adswellfit" (an unusual username to say the least), correct me if I'm wrong (which I'm not), but if a witch were to, upon her broomstick, FLY OVER running water, she has therefore GONE OVER it and furthermeore CROSSED RUNNING WATER. She could've crossed it in a magical unicycle if she did so please, but it wouldn't have made a difference: crossing running water is crossing running water no matter how you achieve it.

Orla C, I'm talking WITCHES here. You know, scary old women with warts and a funny pointy hat and a cauldron with magical powers. They aren't real. You seem to suggest they exist (albeit in a hippy-in-denial fashion). If you were trying to be sarcastic, then you weren't very good at it. If you were being serious, I think you need your head checked.

Its Vampires who cannot cross water! Witches could!
The water was used to KILL witches! Tied to a stool and put under water till drowned usually. If they drowned quickly then it was a case of OOPS SORRY! not a witch, if you were still alive it was the DEVIL Helping them and Back into the water they went till they did DROWN.
Most so called Witches were actually mid-wives or herbalists and travelled between villages, and crossed rivers and streams to do it.
The rest were unfortunate people who had something their accusers wanted!
I doubt any were actually Witches who worshipped the Devil!
They MAY have Been PAGANS rather than Christians but even they don't worship the Devil, Most I know dont believe in HIM!

Vampires are MYTH, Witchcraft isn't It is Historical Fact

I crossed over a bridge today about 3 or 4 times with no problems. Perhaps it depends on the Witch

Here's a little bit on witches and water.

Witches were also supposed to be unable to swim. That was a method of testing/execution with the Puritans, correct? Throw 'em in and if they swim, pull 'em out and kill them. If they drown, oh, well, they'll be in heaven with god.

Witches CAN cross water, witches are more in tune with nature than any humans, water, especialy flowing water is aluring not distressing to witches, I have been studying occult sciences and practicing the ancient art for long, and to this day it has nothing to do with evil, in fact the three fold law prevents witches from doing evil, it was the xtian church that demonised witches and turned ppl against the pagans, witchcraft is the mother of sciences, and the birthplace of philosophy, it isnt evil, witches not only can crass water, the relish it.

I know you're going with the myth of the nasty witches, as put forward by the misogynistic pseudo 'Christian' teachings (my suggestion being that real Christians are far more accepting than many give them credit for). In fact, true witches have an affinity with all elements, including water, and especially running water.

I'd say that that piece of choice propoganda was made up simply to confuse people, and as part of the 'Christian' (again, as opposed to Christian) way of making people doubt their own indigenous spirituality and the subtle takeover of minds and hearts.

But then it could be said I'm a teensy bit biased ...

I have never heard that. It's certainly a myth because I cross running water all the time.

I looked and I can't find anything about a myth like that either.

Why can't Gloria Feldt, Hillery Clinton, Barabra Boxer and Senator Fienstein cross water? because they don't need to travel to Hawaii. Every where they go is in the contintal United States.

Magnetic iron deposits interfere with their internal chemistry.
Psh.
Just Kidding.
But in order for a story to end happy, something in nature needs to stop the witch. And instead of having her get eaten by a bear, story tellers change it too "Witches can't cross rivers".
There you go.
