Well, this could be for a number of resons :-
1 - They really really really admire the celebrity, so want their autograph as a reminder that they met them.
2 - They are trying to show off and be impressive to other people by having a famous person's autograph
3 - If its a really famous celeb, then the autograph will probably be worth money in a few years, or after their dead. (Quite often not true, but you never know!

For proof that you actually met that celeb. To offer the autograph to someone who would be thrilled to have the John Hancock of the person they see in a movie or on tv or listen to their music.
You can also sell an autograph. There are some collectors out their who pay a pretty penney just have a napkin with, god forbid, Anna Nichole Smith's scribble on it.

People do it for many different reasons. Some do it because they really admire the person and they feel that if they have an autograph or something of that sort that they're somehow closer to them. Like they have a piece of their favorite star and something from that star just to them. You know what I mean?

I have no idea why someone would ask for an autograph, Those people are no more important than you and me.
