It is hard to say since I do not know your body shape. What I use a lot is the virtual model available online. www.mvm.com/index.htm
you can create a model similiar to your shape and try clothes from various places on her. I think a nice suit is always in style. So are jeans with a nice sweater for the weekends. I have a few pairs of gaucho pants and pair them with different tops and I love them. I am a size 6/8, my best friend is an 18/20 and the gaucho style looks great on both of us! Good luck!

My advice for pants would be to do something with a medium rise - the low rise is for the tiny teeny boppers, and the super high rise isn't as flattering. Avoid the straight leg pants, because while they are in style, they aren't flattering on many types of people. Go for something with a normal boot-cut or a slight flare. They're a great basic & never go out of style.
For tops, the Argyle print is in style for winter, especially for sweaters & vests - which any age range can do, but I think is really appropriate for 20's and 30's. I also have seen a lot of the "men's button down" shirts but cut for women's curves. If you go with one like that, it's casual but still kind of sexy and also not for the teens so much. If you get one w/stripes going down, it can be really slimming too! I posted a source to my favorite brand of this shirt with pictures!
I hope that helps =)

Well, you didn't list your body type, just a dress size. So figure that out first. This is a great link for helping with that, plus some general tips for fashion for each body type.
http://www.melange4women.com/drforyoboty.html
For skirts and dresses, look for knee length. Anything higher is going to add pounds, and possibly be too youthful. A tea length will shorten you and add pounds. If you want an ankle length, make sure it's simple and flowing. Avoid anything with lots of ruffles, flounces, tiers, or ruching. They add pounds. A great look this season is the wrap dress. I love this style, it looks good on every body type. They are slimming, flatter curves, and can make any woman look evenly proportioned.
Pencil skirts are always a classic style for women. They are mature and sophisticated, and as long as they fit right they will flatter you.
Another cut to try is the tulip. It's a small flare at the hem for a more flirty look that's not too youthful.
For jeans, look for darker colors to slim, and straight or boot cut to lengthen the legline. They should sit right below the waist for the best fit, anything that sits on your waist may look too old. Avoid tapered, wide flares, low-rise, and stretch denim.
Your pants should be a similar cut and style to the jeans. They should sit right below your waist, not on it or your hips, and have a simple lines.
For shirts, try a layered look. A knit cami or tank under a jacket is a great way to hide flaws and give the look of even curves. Your shape will determine the shape of the jacket that will look best on you. If you are top heavy, then look for simple clean cuts with little to no detailing. If you are bottom heavy, then look for wider necklines and detailing to draw the eye up. If you are evenly proportioned, then look for tapered styles to show off your waist and curves.
Then get a great pair of dress boots. Not only can you wear them with so many things, they lengthen the legline, slim the leg, and are great for the cooler fall and winter weather.

If I were you...I would choose a celebrity around your age, who's style you admire....that can at lease give you an idea of what to wear....and just always remember that as long as you are comfortable and confident you will look great no matter what you wear!!!!
