If you have applied and were accepted to a college, university, or other secondary school; speak with their financial aid counselor. They will know many sources of financial aid and what you will need to do to apply for scholarships, grants, and loans.

If your school has a website, you can usually find contact information for their financial aid department. You can also look up the location and contact info in a student guidebook.

As a Lakota, you are entitled to federal and state grants, scholarships, etc. If you are attending a college or university, fill out the FAFSA and mail it to the address listed on the packet. You can also fill it out via the internet. Members of the Lakota tribe, like several other tribes and races, are considered minorities here in the United States, and this is why they are eligible for these types of benefits.

There are exceptions to this, however. For example, if a black male or female applied to a historically black college or university, that person would not receive any federal aid, based on race. The individual could still receive aid, which is based on income, family member of an alumnus, military experience, academic achievements from high school or previous college work.

Speaking with a guidance counselor will steer you in the right direction. That person will be able to answer many more of your questions regarding this. They are trained and better qualified to assist you. Best of luck to you, and I hope this helps. Below I have listed the website for the FAFSA.
