Dunno what kind of box you've got. But on my Humax Freeview PVR you can use the USB port to connect to a PC & rip recorded programmes off :)

If you are asking about the USB port on the DVR, and not the USB cable as the question states, it can be used for several different purposes. First, be certain it is USB and not an HDMI slot as is available with HD DVR's.
There will be the universal USB symbol about the port if so.
You can use the USE port to connect many new mini-players, personal recorder devices which can bring programs from your DVR to a portable device. There is also capability with some DVR's to connect digital camcorders and digital cameras through a USB connection. This would allow you to copy movies or pictures to your DVR.

Depends on what product you have. A dvr from directv has not finalized a use for the usb po=rt. It will, in the near future be utilized to download recordings from your dvr to a dtv to go unit. a small portable screen you can play anywhere.
It you try to use it for other purposes now you may damage your dvr.
