I am looking for a chihuahua. I would really like a baby so that I can bond with it from the start and would like one that will stay under 5 lbs. I live in Fort Worth, Texas and would like to find one around me. I will not have an animal shipped so that is not an option. I looked at all the animal shelters around me and couldnt find one. So if anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it

Check the newspaper classifieds or look online for a classified site in your area. Also www.petfinder.com will let you locate animal shelters in or around where you live.

You might have to travel a bit, since everything is far away when you live in Texas. Make sure that a chihuahua is the right pet for you, and that you don't just want one because they are cute. They are very nervous little animals.
Also, don't be stuck on a puppy. Puppies are a lot of work. Dogs bond with love and affection. You can get a young dog who needs a home and will love you just like you raised it from day one. There are loads of dogs at shelters and rescues who need homes.

You can find a breeder in your area by doing a search online, looking in dog the fancy magazine (you can find at any pet store), or your local paper. I would suggest you completely read up on any breed you want to get prior to getting one so you know the pros and cons of the breed. I personally have a chihuahua and will never have another. Don't get me wrong, I love him to death. He just has some characteristics that don't mesh well with me which are typical characteristics of the chihuahua breed.

Please consider adopting a mature dog.
He or she will bond with you just as well as a puppy, but you'll have the advantages of a house-trained dog from the start.
Plus you'll always have the knowledge that you rescued a shelter dog from death. That's something very special!

I saw a miniature Chihauhua once. It was full grown and fit in the palm of your hand. I almost stepped on it.
