Halloween was taken to America by immigrants from Ireland and Scotland and has become enormous in America. It was originally a Pagan festival called Samhain that was christianized as the night before All Saints Day (All Hallows Eve, Hallows means Holies or Saints).
It's a fun festival for kids and a celebration of the end of summer. It also makes the dark nights light up with colour and brings people out of their houses to socialize. I love it. Always have, always will.

We celebrate Halloween because it is based on the ancient fete
( Festival) All- Hallo's- Eve. All- Hallo's- Eve was the most powerful day according to the proficies, it was a day when powers of all sorts could be tapped into. Since all fairy tales and wise tales are based on actual events, Like the sword in the stone there were acutal knights of the round table and Merlin the great wizard had been born by a extreme source of good and when he was encountered by a demon this is what he became and on October 31 he had ultimate power and stoped King Arthur for harnessing the power of Excailiber.

History: The Celtic festival of Samhain is probably the source of the present-day Halloween celebration. The Celts lived more than 2,000 years ago in what is now the United Kingdom, Ireland, and northern France. Their new year began on November 1. A festival that began the previous evening honored Samhain, the Celtic lord of death. The celebration marked the beginning of the season of cold, darkness, and decay. It naturally became associated with human death. The Celts believed that Samhain allowed the souls of the dead to return to their earthly homes for this evening.
On the evening of the festival, the Druids, who were the priests and teachers of the Celts, ordered the people to put out their hearth fires. The Druids built a huge new year's bonfire of oak branches, which they considered sacred. They burned animals, crops, and possibly even human beings as sacrifices. Then each family relit its hearth fire from the new year's fire. During the celebration, people sometimes wore costumes made of animal heads and skins. They told fortunes about the coming year by examining the remains of the animals that had been sacrificed.
The Romans began the conquest of the Celts in A.D. 43 and ruled much of what is now the United Kingdom for about 400 years. During this period, two Roman autumn festivals were combined with the Celtic festival of Samhain. One of them, called Feralia, was held in late October to honor the dead. The other festival honored Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. Apples probably became associated with Halloween because of this festival.
It is like asking why we celebrate Christmas, Jesus was not born on December 25th.

We still celebrate Hallowe'en because it's fun and it is quite nice to have a fun, child-centred holiday. I know people go on about it coming from pagan origins, etc., but one must look at it in terms of modern society.
Dressing up in costume gives children a chance to be "someone else" or something else for a day, to encourage their sense of imagination and their creativity. Just imagine being your favourite superhero or a princess for a day!!!
Contrary to what people believe, it really isn't about the candy. It's going around the neighbourhood and to family members, chanting trick or treat, or singing songs kids learned in school. It's about seeing what all the other children are wearing and getting ideas. Hallowe'en is just a chance for good, clean fun. (And the candy really is pretty good, too.)

Well as a lover of this very fun celebration I say we all have a DARK side to us and we just love to enjoy the day. Life has too few fun celebrations. I also think it's a time of secret expressions for example I have always loved ugly witches and I always dress up as one on Halloween I even laugh like one (a family joke). Most of all it's an ancient pagan practise and people just feel they have to acknowledge it. As long as weirdos don't cause damage or pain- LONG LIVE HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where I live, we don't really celebrate it. I'm sure we would if we could, It's to cold here to walk to house to house, and its a very bad area to also do that. I would be concerned about the children if they had dressed up and went house to house. We don't even buy candy anymore because kids stopped comming to our door.

You got some good answers. Basically, it's an excuse to have fun, to take something that used to mean something and "innocent" it down to a basic level so that there's something in it for everybody.
Of course there's still those weird elements that survive. Like Nikki, up there, using my avatar. Now I'm spooked.

We celebrate Halloween because of the candy and to see what kind of scary costumes people are going to wear, what kind of jack o lanterns there is to see and its overall a really fun, exciting experience in itself.
