Generally a quite unhappy life, marred by poverty, mental instability, horrible family life, and possibly serious alcohol abuse. Enjoyed some of the fruits of his labors the last few years of his life, but was pretty upset over the death of his wife and was still pretty whacked out during this time.

Poe led a pretty miserable life. His father left when he was very young, then his mother died of TB. He was adopted by the Allan family, but his foster father did not care for him (gave him no money for school). His teenage love died of brain cancer, when he went to college he had to burn his furniture to stay warm. He was kicked out of West Point. He married his 13 year old cousin, and she later died of TB. He died alone in the gutter.

His life when he was living? Well, let me tell you, it was decidedly more animated than his life after he stopped living, and marginally better than his death when he was living, and undoubtedly superior to his death when he was dying.
