A Constitutional republic.
The Constitution is like the "rules of the game." It sets forth how the government works.

The government of the United States is supposed to be a constitutional democracy. It's based loosely on the ancient Greek democratic tradition, in which names of all eligible men were placed into a pot (or other suitable container) and drawn at random to see whose turn it was to participate in government.
It was believed when this country was set up that government ought to be rule by the people. The colonists were fed up with being under the control of the King of England and of following unfair laws made by people who did not live among them and who they did not vote for. So, after things were settled with blood and guns, they set up the Constitution as a framework for the permanent government of the United States.
Now, the Constitution grants us certain rights, but one by one those rights are being stripped away from us. The recent bill passed removes Habeas Corpus and the right to an attorney IF you are suspected of terrorist activities. Slowly but surely, we will become a dictatorship if the demolition of the Constitution is allowed to continue.
