I think its very antisocial, especially when you are talking to someone ,its very off putting,i would liken it to women who smoke in the street, its just never felt right, and yes it does make people look common ,and lacking good manners.

By 'common' do you mean it is lower-class or rude. Because if you mean common in terms of, "a lot of people do it", then yes, it is quite common. But I don't think it is rude, though it can be.
I chew gum, usually to clean my teeth and/or freshen my breath after eating (in place of brushing my teeth). I always have a pack of gum in the car for exactly this purpose. But, I do not chew it all the time, only in those limited conditions.
I do get annoyed by people who constantly chew gum or do so loudly, but it is far less annoying then smokers or 'loud' people.

Chewing gum isn't common - only the way it's chewed. Chewing with mouth open or "clacking" it loudly is just downright bad manners!

It's more childish than common I think. Although it's a good way to freshen your breath if you're on the go, it's best to throw it away before you encounter anybody else. Only children can be forgiven for smacking away on it in front of other people.

I hate people who chew it with their mouths open and really loud.
Especially people on TV.
