The system pushes water thru a semi-permeable membrane filter under pressure.

The filter separates the larger minerals and salts on one side from the filtered water on the other. The salty, mineral-laden water is called brine and goes into your water drain, while the fresh water is stored in a storage tank until you open the faucet.

The disadvantage of an RO system is that several gallons of brine are generated for each gallon of fresh water produced.

Osmosis is the same process used by your cells to transport water into your cells. Your blood has about the same % of salt as the ocean.
