What would a $40 item cost if you have a 40% off cupon?
Answer is $24, if coupon is applied.
What would a $50 item cost?
Answer is $50, but with 40% off coupon $30
Of course now a days there is tons of exclusion with such a high percentage off coupons.
My method is:
1) 40% off, so the price is 60% of item.
2) Multiply by 6 and divide by ten to give final figure.

base is 100 for percentage.
100% means $40
40% off on $40
=40*40/100
=16$
so cost
=40$-16$
=24$
(you can directly take,40*60%
=40*60/100
=2400/100
=24)
What would a $50 item cost if you have a 40% off cupon?
SAME WAY WE CAN CALCULATE,
50*60/100
=3000/100
=30$

Well, since you don't have to pay, 40%, you only need to pay the remaining 60% of the item.
Once you know this, convert the 60% to a decimal (.60) and multiply whatever the item cost is by that to find out how much you would pay
for $40, it would be (.60*40) $24.
for $50, it would be (.60*50) $30.
=)

An easy way to do it in your head is to take 10% of $40 by moving the decimal to make it $4. Then multiply the $4 x 4 (because it's 40% not 10%) to make it $16. Then subtract 16 from 40 to get $24.
For $50 move the decimal point to get $5, multiply that by 4 for the 40% discount to get $20. Then subtract to get $30.

ok FOR A $40 you would take 40 and multiply by .4 (40%) like this
40
x .4
16.0
then you take $40-$16 equals $24.
For a $50 item you would do the same thing except use $50 instead of $40
Then the answer would be $30.

Its easier for me to break it down into steps
I always start with finding 10% of the price. Then you divide the percentage by 10, then you multiply both of the answers you got from each step.
So if you have $40.00 and a 40% off coupon
10% of $40.00 is $4.00
then 40/10 is 4
$4.00 x 4 = $16
Your coupon will save you $16 dollars
(10% of $50 = $5) x (40/10 is 4)
$5 x 4 = $20
Your coupon will save you $20 dollars

if an item was 40 percent off, then it would cost 60 percent of the original value. 0.6 * 40 = $24. A $50 item would be 0.6 * 50 = $30.
