You must convert it to png or gif format. Bear in mind that gif only allows a limited number of colors, which may reduce the quality of your image. It's best to go for png.
To convert, you can use Adobe Photoshop. Open the bmp, then cut and paste the picture into a new layer above the background layer. Use the eraser tool to erase the parts you want to be transparent. Switch off the background layer to see the transparency. Then save as png.
If you don't own Photoshop, you can download a free package called GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program), which can do the same as decribed above.

BMP do not have a alpha channel and so can not have a transparent background. You must convert the .bmp to a .gif.
You can use a free application such as Pixia to convert an image and add a transparent background.

well I wouldn't keep it as a bmp. they take too long to load. convert it to a jpg using paint. check webmonky.com for the html feature you are looking for to make it transparent. they have lots of great web building info.

Bitmaps can not be transparent. You must convert it to a file format that has transparency, like GIF or PNG.
