this is an interesting question. i personally am very involved with all of my neighbors and am respected by them. i am very fortunate to have the great neighbors that i do. its also very ethically diversified.
it seems to be that people are forced into the development of their children through extra curricular activities, and organized sports. which when i was growing up was pretty much non existent. so this is a good thing. parents with 2,3,4 kids are using every spare second of there time to get them to these functions in order for them to advance in life. time well spent. both parents must work (in middle class) in order to provide financial security for all. it still isn't enough. but there is food on the table. single parents have it even tougher with time management and income.not easy.
so with the evolution of both parents working starting in the 60's and 70's. there was still time to sit on the front porch and see your neighbors. now the front porches have been closed in with windows and doors. we sit in our fenced in back yards on our decks. i don't think anybody is intentionally being hypocritical, there simply isn't enough time or energy in the day.

Don't know who these people are who don't normally speak to their neighbors. Personally, we speak to our neighbors quite a bit & we're not even that outgoing by nature. Most of them are quite pleasant to talk to, though a couple of them have a value system that's far different than mine. You learn after a couple of conversations who the really good people are & who the petty ones are (and you speak to them a little less often).

I know my nieghbors very well. Though i like to keep a safe distance, only because I have my private life as I'm sure they do too. If they ever needed help I would be the first person there to lend a hand.

I know my neighbors, I help several of my elderly neighbors, and so do a few of my other neighbors. We shovel their pathways, and drives when it snows, we help rake their leaves, we check on them when the weather is gross.
I BBQ with neighbors, and attend their weddings, parties, and events.
If you are not speaking to your neighbors, do yourself a favor and do so, why live in a community that is closed?

I know ALL of my neighbors.
It's just a matter of starting and maintaining communication. It leads to strong neighborhoods and helps reduce crime because every neighbor begins to feel a responsibility for the entire neighborhood, not just their own home.

people in densely populated areas (condo, apt neighborhoods) are less likely to know their neighbors because no one wants to feel like they're all in your business and vies versa. in house neighborhoods there's some grass or a fence between people and good fences make good neighbors. also there's a sense of permenance and unity in a house neighborhood.

I know my neighbors but it is best to keep neighbors at arms length sometimes.
