most of the right wing christians they try to appeal to aren't all that christian. they're hateful, ignorant, bigoted christian knockoffs who only believe in jesus so they don't burn in hell. they don't act christlike and they don't think for themselves and they certainly don't mind nasty campaigns for christ.
sorry for the generalization but that's honestly the only way i can figure it.

Republicans stand for pandering to the Christian Right so they can get elected. They do little to nothing for them because this is a constitutionally secular government. Now, that may irk some who feel this is a Christian nation, but that's not how it was set up. It was set up so that there would be no state preference given to any religion. You can be what you want to be without government interference, as long as you obey the secular laws.
A sort of rending unto Caesar so to speak. They engage in hateful and nasty campaigning because it works on the people who don't tune in to whats going on which is most of us.
When the Democrats get it together, sometime in the next millennium, I am sure they will use it too. Maybe even effectively.

That is a very good question.
Karl Rove's attacks on John McCain in 2000 on behalf of a man professing to be a Christian didn't sit well with me and it contributed to my switch to the Democratic party. Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell were big contributers to that smear campaign against McCain.
I'm a Christian and I am not at all impressed with the way many of those Republican Christians come across.

Let's be realistic-- both sides participate in nasty campaigning. Although I must say it seems the R's TEND to engage in starting it.
Examples:
- Arizona- Hayworth vs. Mitchel (I think that's his name)
- Arizona - Kyl vs Peterson
- Virginia - Allen vs. Web
- The recent RNC add about the guy in the south and something do to with a Playboy sponsored party.
RNC ad on terrorism - nothing but a scare tactic.

So does that mean Democrats stand for anti Christian values???
I guess that means their mudslinging is OK. Check the news pal, the nasty, hateful campaigning is practiced by BOTH sides.

Who ever decided that any politician stood for Christian values regardless of their political affiliation? The Republican Platform leans to the Christian philosophy more, but a politician does not stand for anything other than what he says. The platform is of a by gone era.

They're not Christians if you follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Jesus served the poor. Today's rightwing Christians use religion to satisfy their greedy needs.

Usually it's a tactic used to divert attention from the candidate's own shortcomings. What better way to get people to vote for you than to convince them that you are the lesser of two evils?
That's all modern US politics is. Choosing the lesser of two evils.
