I know there is a simple way to do it (Internet Options or the control panel) but I can't remember how to do it.

Yes my friend, you have guessed it right.
1. Click Start-- Control Panel --- Internet options.
2. Here you will find Delete History in the History section. Click delete and all your address bar entry is gone. you can control the Number of days the history can be saved, by default its 10 but you can reduce it.

3. You can also clear Internet Cache by clearing Download Temporary Internet Files. This will keep your internet Cache free and will slightly speed up your system.

I use Microsoft XP Professional. Click open the Control Panel. Open the Internet Options file. A selection of Internet Properties should open. Click Clear History button.

When you delete the cookies there's a button too delete history that's it.
