I personally think that 12 year old is old enough. Once the child is a tenager, the fun is up because people answering the doors don't find it cute anymore, its just annoying.

its not age descrimination! its halloween not a local union. A lot of people go out and buy candy even if they really can't afford it because they want to make it a fun experience for the little kids. If you're old enough to go unaccompanied, go to the store and buy a chocolate bar and if it makes u feel better, say trick-or-treat to the sales clerk. better yet, ask your parents to buy u candy. if they wont, dont expect someone else to.

for the record, i dont have children, i'm only 20 and when i stopped trick-or treating i found great consolation in giving out candies. the way i do it is "one for u, two for me" haha

i'm getting a kick out of how defensive some ppl are getting. I didnt say anything about teenagers not being able to dresss up. in fact, i agree that the costumes get more advanced and interesting when you get older. The thing is, there's age-appropriate activities, if you're dressing like a top model, go to a halloween party and have a good one but when i see the one year old little pumpkin at my door, i'll greet him with a smile and you with a "how pathetic, she put all that effort into a costume just to show up at my door for some free candy"

middle school 12-13. save the candy for the little ones and go to a haunted house or party instead.

I think, by the time a kid is 12-13 a Halloween Party would be more fun, with a treasure hunt, so they can still go door-to-door, but for treasure, and not candy.
Teenagers are sooo much older than they have to be.
They are sooo concerned about appearing childish or being innocent. That is how Halloween has lost its fun for them. They feel like they have to break something, TP a house, or get wasted to participate.
Later on, when they are older, they will miss the innocence and "scariness' of Halloween, and pray to be invited to a costume party-one last time. So they can refuse to go, even.
Some of us love costuming and the theatrical part of Halloween, and won't ever get enough.

you can never be too old, the last time I went was when I was 14 the next Halloween I passed outside the states well I only went with 12, 13, and 14 but my sister will go tomorrow (in France) and she is 12 and she will go next year. tell you what there is no f***ing age limit for trick or treating, the older you are the better the costumes have to be, and the point of halloween isn't being cute, I got more compliments when I was 14 (dressed up as a top model) than when I was 12 (I had 7 arms)...
teenage years are the best for trick or treating combined with a halloween party so you go out with like 10 people all different.

I agree, 12 is about the limit for me. I think once they are older than that, they need to be home giving out the candy or going to some type of party with friends their age. I dont think anyone should ever have to give up Halloween but you do have to give up the candy begging at some age!

I agree...most people get angry when they see an older kid at their door. Personally, I think it's great seeing teenagers dressing up and being silly and going door-to-door, as long as they're just having fun without hurting anyone. But, a lot of people don't agree with me on that, so it's probably better to find other activities kids over 12 can do to still enjoy Halloween.

Kids hate to give up a good thing. Encourage the child to attend parties. They are arranged by friends, family and churches. Twelve is old enough to fix things up for the little ones at their parties, not going out on the streets to get poisoned or other negative stuff.

Yes, I agree that 12 is a good time. A lot of teenagers are into pranks, and it can be very annoying especially when they have no regard for personal property. I still go to take my Grandkids, but I have a 12 yr. old who is already tired of the process.

I'm with you... once their age has "teen" at the end of it, it's over.

At that point, they should be helping little brothers or sisters that are in costume (not in costume themselves) or staying home to hand out candy.

I hate it when teenagers taller than me come up for candy, wearing just a mask and no real costume, and or just come up without even that!

Really I dont think you are ever too old. But if you think the child, tempt them to go to Halloween parties instead of trick or tricking

My kid wants to go out for Halloween and is 13yrs old. I don`t see a problem with it. Kids are expected to grow up before they are really ready nowadays and if they want too go out trick or treating then let them it`s only a bit of fun.
