Wash it by soaking it in lukewarm water with a very mild detergent. I use original Dawn. Don't agitate the water. After soaking an hour or so, drain and sqeeze out water gently, or you can put it in your washer and spin it dry as long as your spin cycle doesn't add water. Rinse in plain lukewarm water sqeezing the water through, be sure not to rub it because it will felt. If it is still too dirty, repeat as many times as necessary. the rinse water is very good for your garden! To remove even more moisture, roll up in a towel like a sweater, and sqeeze. I then spread it out on sweater drying racks- net that is stretched over a simple frame, and let it air dry. The time to dry depends on your climate. Card and spin. Each step takes out a little more soil, so don't worry if it isn't absolutely clean before you card. You'll card a lot of that out.
