Orson Welles, he gained international notoriety for his October 30, 1938 radio broadcast of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, which panicked millions of listeners. Suggestive American's even committed suicide believing the World was at an end... an early show of the power of the media.

This is more general knowledge than it is triva. But I guess, for a younger generation, this is probably more obscure.
One comment: While many people may scoff at the events centering around that radio broadcast, claiming that people must have been more gullible, back then, I remind folks about how fast rumors spread and how rapidly conspiracy theorists get their ideas into the mainstream media.
It doesn't take a majority of people believing to get the rumor mill running. All it take is one person writing, in Yahoo Answers, "I read, somewhere that Abiganistanian immigrants are getting top priority entry into the US without any kind of criminal background check. Is this true?" Within minutes, we would see a variety of responses, including several that verify the accuracy of a patently false statement.

Orson Welles.
BTW, the dialogue in the scene in "Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow", where Polly is describing the attack of the giant robots to her editor over the telephone is taken from the 1938 radio broadcast.

It JUST happened... and no I am not kidding. In Denmark a broadcast of the Danish kingdom being fractured with video shots of the Royal Family fleeing to England in the Royal Jet. The Broadcaster apologized and recanted immediately.... but the damage was done. Dead serious.... just happened three days ago I believe.
