The single most important thing to remember when buying clothing is to dress for what looks good on you, both style for your body type, and colors for your coloring (skin, hair, and eyes.) No matter how hot a style or color is for the season, if it doesn't complement you, then it's going to look bad when you try to wear it. (It's never a good idea to turn into a fashion slave.)
And also buying only things that you love. If you can't make up your mind whether you like or dislike a style, then leave it on the rack. It's better to have a few pieces that you love than a closet full of things you bought on impulse and wore only once. If you truly love an item, then you will wear it again and again, and not care about whether or not it's in style.
Besides, the fashion rules change almost as often as the trends themselves. So trying to follow any or all of them gets to be a headache. Instead, you should learn what looks good on you, what doesn't look good on you, and create your own rules to live by based on that.

Less is more. Too much make up and too many accessories are never a good thing.
I think all the other rules have gone with the wind. It's fine to wear a bag that doesn't match your shoes. You can wear white shoes after labor day. Fashion is fun! So play with it.

2. Never wear flipflops when it is colder than 50 degrees.
3. If I can see your rolls through your shirt, wear a damn jacket.
4. Never over do it with accessories, I hate all that "matchy" mess, matching shirt, purse, shoes, necklace, & bracelet. So wrong.

clothes that leave your fat hanging, or bouncing along or those that force you to drag them or carry them along are OUT
it's either shorts or trousers, no ambiguous trouser cross breeds
if you're more than a decade older than what designers intended for what you're wearing then then rethink the situation. Miniskirts and 20 y/o wrinkles don't always mix well.
having said that, for me, it's about COMFORT before looks EVERYTIME
but then i'm a guy, i dont' have to worry about the inches on heels or which bra or which thong chafes less, and what if it gets skidmarks thankfully!!
