Air is one of the four elementals- earth, air, fire, water. Air is a mixture of gases that form an atmosphere round our planet, held in place by Earth's gravity. Mammals need the oxygen in air to breathe, and plants need the carbon dioxide in air to grow.
Air can be compressed into smaller space and taken places, like for diving or up into space for astronauts. Is that enough to get u started?

If he hasn't got the homework question actually written down, there's a possibility that your son has only given you the bare bones of the actual question. For a nine year old, it sounds extremely vague and it is very rare that a teacher would be so vague. Ask your son if he has the actual question written down anywhere at school. He may have forgotten it or left it in his desk. If he was listening to the teacher, he will know that he's only got part of the question. If that is the case, I would get him to write out what you can with the title 'Air' at the top. Then, you write a letter to the teacher explaining that you both tried to do the homework but the subject title was very vague. On the other hand, there is the chance that he wasn't listening, or didn't understand. In your letter, tell the teacher that he didn't understand if that was the case. To me it does seem a very vague question and even if it isn't exactly what the teacher wanted, at least your son will have made an effort to do the work. Your explanation will help the teacher understand why the work may not be a full answer.
