In modern times, the only mail that has been delivered on Sunday is Express except in exigent circumstances. If a blizzard or flood has prevented the carriers from making their appointed rounds during the week, the Postmaster might authorize carriers to work on Sunday. During the last two weeks before Christmas, carriers are sometimes brought in to deliver parcels on Sunday. Sunday parcel delivery also occurred during the UPS strike 12 years ago.

Customers often think the regular mail was delivered on Sunday, if they checked their box at the usual time on Saturday and the mail was delivered after that.

Mail Delivery On Sunday

Yes, on and off throughout it history.

"U.S. Postmaster General Gideon Granger responded in 1810 by having Congress pass federal legislation governing all 2,300 post offices, declaring that U.S. mail would be moved seven days per week, and all post offices that received mail had to be opened at least one hour each day."

"The rapid expansion of the railroad and then the telegraph changed forever the commercial business climate of the country. As a result, seven-day mail service lost its pragmatic rationale for providing up-to-date market information.

By the 1850s, postmaster generals were eliminating Sunday movement of the mail. Following the Civil War, the practice ceased completely. Likewise, post offices were gradually closed on Sundays. In 1912, a coalition of ministers and postal clerks finally convinced Congress to close all post offices on Sunday."

Apparently though, the question of whether mail, even express/priority mail, is delivered on Sundays is up to the local postmaster.

I also work for the US Postal Service. Only Express Mail is sent on Sundays, and that's directly to the door.

It seems like they will deliver Sunday if it's Christmas and you pay extra? I really don't know. Try the Postal Service website.
