The Exorcist.
Chilling, absolutely scary to this day. The director is a bit psycho too, and just horrible things. I sound like I'm babbling, but I get speechless just thinking about it.

The Haunting is possibly the greatest scary movie without even the single sign of violence. Sure there's a car crash, but nothing more. About an hour into the movie the scariest scene takes place. Most of the main characters are huddled up in the main room while the spirit of the house tries to get in. The ceiling, the walls, and even the doors bend in and begin to moan. Freaky stuff. Another slightly more violent film is Jacob's Ladder. It's about a Vietnam vet who starts to go insane. It's hard to tell what's reality and what's not. The Sixth Sense was an awesome movie, but it wasn't scary. It's not technically the whole movie, but the part in the Twilight Zone movie with the Gremlin is incredibly scary. The way it taunts him on the wing of the airplane without anyone else to see is pure genius of film making.
PS get the original black and white The Haunting, the new one is awful!

The Amytiville Horror. Remember the Lutz's moving into a great house which just so happens to have had a family murdered there before they moved in?
Its the bit where the father is outside by the boat house and sees the eyes of his little girls imaginary friend in her bedroom window. The eyes were simply 2 demonic red glowing orbs. A real pant filler!
Alternatives:
Omen2
Rosemarys baby
Poltergeist
Sixth sense (great)
The Exorcist is pretty mind blowing (my mrs won't watch it!)

The Signalman, not a film but a made for TV feature, scared witless watching it, yet could be shown before the watershed. The twist you only find out at the end was the fact that the ghost was the signalman himself, chilled to the bone.

Mindhunters, watched that last night and couldn't sleep, why oh why do I do it to myself!
sixth sense, so didn't get it till the end, haha and stir of echoes is another good one like that....
'the ring' got me going, esp the drive home when my 'friends' kept ringing me!!!
its not supernatural so to speak but 'the game' is an excellent
film with twist after twist! got right into my head and kept my guessing right to the end!
the final destinations are reliable for gore and grusome deaths (altho see mindhunters above for some of those too)
if you like the supernatural then check out the series supernatural, you will not be disappointed! (along the same lines for series with eerie twisty turns try; tru calling, dead like me, dead zone, 4400, medium and/or mount pleasant)
