It's an American cliche'. It means that your ambitions to do something else - be a singer or run your own business or whatever - probably won't pan out.

In fact many people DO have two "jobs" - one that is "on the side". Some start to do well enough that they can give up their salaried or hourly jobs so don't get discouraged (unless he is referring to your artistic talents - if so, take it as valid criticism!! But also ask a few more people).

I do believe it was a term born from nightclubs. Singers would audition to sing at the nightclubs. If they were not good, they would be told "not to give up their day jobs". Otherwise they were saying what they were trying to do they were not good at so keep what you got.

He meant that whatever you were showing him, wasn't good enough to make a living of it, and that's why you shouldn't give up your job, cos the other(whatever it was you did) wont be enough to live on!
So he wasn't impressed...

When you did that pole dance for him, he was obvioulsy not impressed. He said that because you would not make any money as a dancer.
