She wrote me a check for $40. I don't need the money, nor did I want her to pay me. The thought of cashing the check makes me feel bad, but on the other hand I'm afraid of offending her if I don't. Can someone please put yourself in her shoes and tell me what you think? Thanks!

Put the check in an envelope and send it back to her with a note saying, "We are friends and the time I was able to spend with you while cleaning out your basement was worth more than money. Thank you for the consideration, but I can not accept this from a friend."

Cash the check and then take her out to lunch for a girls' day out. That way you accept the money she gave you(won't hurt her feelings) and you're giving some of it back to her by taking her out to lunch or something. Plus it would be fun.

She would probably feel worse if you returned it. I would guess that she has the mindset that no one rides for free.
Why don't you put the money to good use? Cash the check and make a donation to a good cause in her name. Send her the donation confirmation.

My grandfather would always pay me to do things for him, I would refuse to take it (it would hurt his feelings) I would find the money in a coat pocket or hid in a book or whatever. He was 70+when he starting doing this....so in return...I always followed up with treats for our next visit. Lunch, muffins, donuts, coffee and I also rented movies....when he said Thank you....I would say No, Thank you....this is because you were so kind....:O)
He'd just hug me.
I think it was his way of saying thank you and please don't get tired of me....ha like that would ever happen.Bless his soul he was the Greatest!
I wouldn't be mad or feel bad maybe this was her way of saying wow you gave up a whole day...please don't think I was using you....or think everything we get together I'll put you to work...lol
I like the suggestion of buying her lunch...Wolfman said it...and believe me ...it worked for me...and after a day in the basement ....you both could use a treat!

Call her up and ask her out to dinner, just the two of you! Spend about forty bucks on the evening,(not hard) then cash the check! You'll be even and have a good time too!

If you don't need the money, but don't want her to feel bad, why don't you cash the check and make a donation to a charity in her name? That way everyone wins!!

If you really feel bad then take the money and put it to good use.
I think you need to take the money and use it for both of you. Take her out to eat or something.

Just ask her if you could exchange a favor for a favor instead of the money....and that you believe friends do things for friends for free and you just cannot bring yourself to take the money.....then next time you need a favor let her know she will be the one you call on

well there are several things you can do. you can not cashed it, just rip it up and forget about it. then if your friend asked you about it in the future you can say that you lost it or probably ripeed it up and threw it away when you were cleaning out your house or apt.
then u could also deposit it. maybe she was thanking you for doing something she was not able to do for herself and it was something that would had taken her longer to do.
or you can also invited her to lunch and./or dinner and spend the money that way.

You may be called upon again for your services if you took the money. Tell her you're just glad to help, or whatever. (Would she help you move?) Either way, she wanted to give you the money -- don't feel bad. And don't help her again if it doesn't 'go both ways.'
