if i knew the plan before hand, i'd probably chicken out at the last min.

I think those are 2 questions... Ben Affleck was going to die to save mankind, and if he had, then we'd all be much better off...
To answer the first question, I believe any good father would have done the same, knowing that his daughter loved Affleck's character.

In real life, you probably wouldn't have to die. They would have sent better pilots and better geologists. Astronomers will be able to map these objects more accurately much earlier than depicted in that movie. I thought the movie was very entertaining, but I would rather have George W. Bush die to save mankind. It would be the least he could do to make up for his incompetence.

Yeah I probably would. I think that he did it more for his daughter because she was so in love with the Ben Affleck character. He knew that he wouldn't live forever. I would die if I knew that it would save all mankind.

and yes I know they used that quote in Star Trek iv , but I knew the quote before they used it.

He was doing it to save the love of his daughter's life, to save her heartbreak. I'm not sure I would risk my life for my daughter's boyfriend (if she had one), but I definitely would to save her or any one of her children (if she had any).
Would I risk my life to save the world in general?
I would certainly do my best.
