check your drivers for the sound card and do a reinstall of them...

you mean why cant my soundcard work? Maybe its your software that is weird. The thing i do is i OPEN my dxdiag which is located in your system folder in your windows folder. or do a search to find it. And then test your sound card for sound and midi. It works for me. The reason is does that to my computer is because it doesnt find the software untill a tester finds it and test it.

if your sound card is a on board the mother board, you need to download the driver from the manufactor, or put the motherboard disk that came with it.
you can always unistall your sound card from the system information, reboot and hope your operating system finds it

Check and amke sure your speakers are plugged in and downloaded correctly
