Real Estate sales is either the hardest high paying job or the easiest low paying job you will ever have. Donald Trump made his millions in real estate for example. One must remember being a real estate agent is being in business for yourself. It all depends on how you apply your skills, knowledge and are able to market yourself. If you look at it like a business you will think of ways to do more business with less time. You will need to learn how to delegate the time consuming "dumb" work and free yourself up to do what generates more listings and sales. Most people never make much in real estate because they think it will be easy. Like starting up any new business, it takes working around the clock to get the ball rolling before it takes on a kind of snowball effect. Find a broker that has top producers or find a top producer that needs an assistant and learn what they do to generate the income you want to achieve. If you are just looking for a part time income, go work at Wal-Mart, because you will end up spending more than you earn working part time in real estate.

Some realtors make a lot; some make nothing. Most make less than $20,000 a year. With all the people who have real estate license, only 25% really make money. And most the money goes to the top 5%. Those top performers can make over $100,000 a year. In Canada, you do not need a good education to take the real estate course, not even a high school diploma. The course only take 6 months to complete. That is one reason so many people go into real estate business.

Everyone gave such great answers! I feel like most people look at us Realtors as money hungry salespeople. Those of us in the business know better! The one thing that needs to be said that no one has said yet is, if you are considering getting into Real Estate for the money then don't. You will never be successful! You should only be considering being an agent if you like helping people and care about finding them the right house or selling their house. Real Estate is not a sales job!! It is a relationship job, it is about forming a relationship with your client so you can find them the house that fits their needs. If you don't care about your client then you will not be able to find them the right house for them. Then you will be one of those agents that all those bitter people who answer questions and generalize that all agents are greedy and only care about making money! Please do the rest of us a favor and don't get your license if that is the case! Also consider all the costs associated with getting your license. First there is the school fees, then the fees to go active, the fees your broker will charge (most will charge a monthly fee plus a percentage of your commission with each sell), there are quarterly Realtor association fees, MLS fees, cost of signs, cost of advertising, cost of flyers for listings and don't forget your Supra (this is the key that gets you into houses )and lockboxes. You are responsible for these fees whether or not you have a closing. One last thing to consider is you probably will not have your first closing for at least 6 months after you get your license. Real Estate is hard work it is not just unlocking doors and showing a house. I am sorry I did not sugar coat my answer but it is the truth, and I know many agents that have gotten out of the business and said they wished someone had told them these things. It is very rewarding when you can find someone a home and they love it and are happy, I love my job, but it is hard! Find a mentor who has been in the business and will help you. If you are in DFW email me and I will help you or I can find someone in your area to help you.

I knew an agent that made between $3k and $5k per transaction when she started out and she sold about 3-4 homes a month - so she averaged $168k a year, less what she paid to her listing service, which was around $25k per year.

It depends on how many houses he/she sells. They work on commission. They also get a percentage of sale for any houses they list.
