I'm planning on reading the unabridged version shortly (Modern Library Edition unabridged is 1488 pages according to Amazon.com). My lazy friend is currently reading the abridged version (Bantam Clasic Edition abridged is 531 pages). What's been "abridged out" of the 950 or so pages? Thanks in advance. Please give as detailed info as you can. I really want to read the unabridged version.

I think if you read one of the versions you wouldn't want to read the other. At least, I'm that way - if I know the end of the story and most of the deatils I wouldn't want read it again. Just go for unabridged. Not too many books are as good as Count of Monte Cristo.

An Abridged version is basically a very long summary in the context that someone is paid to go and edit the book to make it like 300 pages shorter so that people that are on the go a lot can read it fast, same with audiobooks. If you have time on your hands, always read (hear) unabridged books but if you want to just get it over with, read the abridged one.

I've read both. I read the abridged version first, and I didn't know it was 'abridged' when I bought it or read it. It was the one at the college bookstore. Five or six years later, I came across the unabridged two volume edition of the book, I bought it and read it because I remembered loving the book. So if I had to choose, I'd go with unabridged IF you like to read and have the time to do so.

The difference is one Bridge. JK, I think you are better off reading Unabridged. They're not so different and the unabridged leaves out alot of the cool vernacular of the era.

the abridged version is a lot quicker and easier to read. You still get the same story with less details.
