The above answer is a good explanation.
I use it every year to make ornaments and such. It can be expensive. I bought a pasta machine last year so I can press it through and make it real flat to cut out or layer different colors. It will also mix the colors for you. Be sure to follow the baking instructions, they are precise for a reason.
There are also books you can but where you buy the clay and some fun projects and instructions are on www.HGTV.com under 'crafts'.
Hope you give it a try...it's fun!

Polymer clay is more of a clay if you're doing intricate pottery items or projects. You also need to bake this kind of clay in the oven, it's not like modeling clay. But it can be used for a lot of things, but there's a rolling pin for clay you can purchase or a pasta machine where it flattens it real good so you can work with it, and you can cut shapes out of it and make just about anything.... I bought some so I can make a handprint of my baby and put it onto a scrapbook page and if that doesn't work i'll just mount it on something.

Polymer clay such as Fimo is, as its name suggests, a synthetic polymer-based clay. You can bake it in a household oven. It doesn't dry if left out, and comes in a variety of colors. It's generally used for small sculpture, since it's rather expensive.

you can find lots of info on www.polymerclaycentral.com and glassattic.com. i researched it a lot on these sites before i bought anything - they can tell you what type of clays are the best and what tools you should get. the polymerclaycentral has a beginner chat on wednesday nights. i chatted and it helped me a lot.
