I think if you learn to play an instrument from when you a very young, it teaches you a whole load of other skills that will stay with you. First of all there's a level of discpline required. It helps children to develop fine motor skills, they learn to read music and to appreciate music of a range of genres. I learned the piano from when I was 4, and the clarinet from 9, and this taught me the necessary skills to teach myself how to play the flute and guitar as well.
I'm a bit rusty now, but yes I do think it has enhanced my life.

Great question! I couldn't exist without playing musical instruments and writing music. For me, it is the only way of expressing my inner feelings and emotions adequately. I'm not saying I have anything more important or interesting than people that don't play or write but all I know is it stops me from going insane; I feel if I didn't have music, I would be in a care home. It seems so natural to play music, more natural than talking. I see colours when I hear music and I go into a trance state with some music, I'm thinking specifically of Bach now - his music is the closest I have ever got to experiencing god, in fact to me he is God and the ability to manipulate the air around you is a beyond description. Your heart feels complete when you hear or play something beautiful. Is there more to life?

I started piano at age 4 and violin at age 8, then played professionally around the world in bands until a few years ago (when I 'settled down')! All I can say is that the pleasure I've given to others through my music has been worth every second I spent practising. Not to mention the pleasure I still get from playing for my own entertainment. Greatest possible natural high.

Annie tell you the truth I am not a musician but I wished to God that would have learned when I was yonger. My friend is a musician and because of that she has learned patience and disipline and how to play beautiful music to calm her down when she has nothing else. Its a way to soothe yourself its like having a very healthy hobby! Whether you do it for recreation or for a career I think it is a wonderful Idea.

As a keyboard player there's nothing more relaxing and enjoyable - but expensive to have the piano kept properly tuned!
