Use ice to freeze the gum. Just put an icecube on the spot until the gum is so hard it breaks off then pull the gum off the carpet.
If there is still gum remaining, then you might try cutting it off from the carpet fibers. Just be careful not to make it obvious.

Try placing ice into a zip lock baggie. Place baggie on the gum until frozen and chip the gum away. May be a long process.
Good Luck!

After the ice, use peanut butter. Something about the oils in peanut butter loosen the gum from the fibers.

Peanut butter works great when it is stuck in your hair, but the oil might stain the carpet. Try ice.

Put Ice cubes in it, or butter will loosen it, then use rag and soapy water to get butter out of carpet.
