I had a nick name at one time, some people still call me by it. But I will not answer or valid it, cause it is not my name.
Nick names say more than you think.

It can be either mocking or expressing concern or love. But it only comes after some development in relationship.
It is a way of getting closer. A person who just met me today wont call me by nick name. But a close friend will that tells the difference.

A nickname may well tell you something about the person who is called by it, but it may more clearly tell you something about the person who gave them that name. For example, I have a tendency to call people random things, e.g. Kam is Camouflage, Camel, Camera, Camelot, Kamela Anderson, anything with the sound "kam" in it. Now that's more an expression of my boredom, and my sense of humour than of her. She certainly bears little resemblance to a camel.

On the other hand, I call my boyfriend Bean, because he is a skinny bean, and my sister Madriella, because she is olive-skinned, and as a young child I believed her to be Spanish, and Madriella to be the Spanish word for Miss. Hence something can be learned about both of these people and myself if you understand the reasoning behind a nickname. But the intention is crucial, because nicknames evolve and mutate away from their original forms in a way only the recipient, the giver, and those closest, understand.

Maybe it does to them and their friends or family. I have a nick name that means nothing, except to me and my sister. She gave it to me, and she is the only one who uses it, and I sign emails with it, but only to her.
