Can you track where something came from using an IP address?

Sorry, should have given more info! The 'something' is that someone changed my password on a website and I have the IP address it was changed from. Is there any way I can find out who did it?

In Short, an IP address is a unique address that every computer has as it connects to the internet, it's a way of mapping sites and personal computers.
For a full definition and a little more detail into IP addresses look at this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address
or here: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/I/IP_address.html

there are ways for you to determine where something came from but it depends upon what you mean... if your talking about email, it will depend upon what email provider you use. Really the answer to your second question depends what the 'something' is.
You can do google or yahoo searches for IP Tracking and that might help you specify your 'something' more. Hope this helps
:-) Best Wishes

**Ok well to better answer your question then I would contact the company or whoever owns the website you are talking about, if it's your own website contact your host provider. Explain the situation to them and give them the IP address. They will be able to figure it out for you, They have tools and programs at their fingertips they can use, for the regular person without those tools it becomes complicated. So that would be my advice. Best Wishes

an IP address is a unique identifier for a device on a network. they consist of 4 groups of numbers such as

10.56.1.2 each number can be up to 255 only

to see yours in the start > run menu type

command

when a dos screen opens type

ipconfig

and yes packets of data contain the senders address so it is theoretically possible to trace things back (but reality is a different thing)
